Press Release: Production Begins on Videogame-Based Comedy Movie

CHAMPAIGN, IL (December 30, 2005) – Get your tokens ready! Dark Maze Studios has begun production on Press Start, the world’s first videogame adventure comedy movie.

Unlike movies based on specific video games, Press Start captures the full experience of battling the forces of evil in a realm where physics, cosmology and logic are replaced by Cool Things To Do With Controller Buttons. In this case, the protagonist is a suburban youth who discovers his adventurous, if berserk, destiny when he’s recruited by an ill-tempered ninja and a tough-as-nails space soldier to save the world from a tyrannical, but comically insecure, sorcerer.

Expected to be completed in 2006, Press Start is built on a videogame smorgasbord. References fly, with gags based on everything from classics like “Donkey Kong” to modern first-person-shooters. Most of the movie’s “mythology,” however, stems from the 8- and 16-bit games seen on the now-ancient Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, and Sega Genesis consoles.

While it might sound like the kind of movie that warrants a substantial budget, Dark Maze Studios has made it an enthusiastic undertaking with far-from-Hollywood financing.

“What we lack in money,” explains director Ed Glaser, “we make up for in poverty. So we’re running on passion and ingenuity. So far, it’s working. Everyone involved in the movie is incredibly excited — there’s just never been anything like it before.”

Glaser provides a “peek behind the screens,” as it were, on the Press Start web site’s blog, accessible from Visitors will find production updates, news, photos, trivia, and whatever funny stories from the set that the cast and crew, with their dangerous-looking props, will let him share.
