The Best Videogame Movie is Getting Better

By Ed Glaser | Thursday, July 3, 2014

In two weeks Press Start gets an upgrade! On July 18, we’re releasing a completely remastered version of our very first feature film.

This is no tiny update. Press Start: The Ultimate Remastered Edition has been recolored, re-lit, and restored to significantly higher quality. Hordes of nasty compression artifacts that were present on the original DVD have been terminated with extreme prejudice. And don’t worry: we haven’t added any CGI banthas. Or the Shopkeeper axing first. Or Hayden Christensen.

We’ve also gone back to the original tape masters, pulling unused footage to restore never-before-seen deleted and alternate scenes as special features.

And here’s the kicker: on July 18 we’re also putting the entire film online. Absolutely free. Though if you buy the DVD, you’ll also get:

  • 3 Commentary Tracks, including an all new filmmaker commentary
  • Never-Before-Seen Deleted Scenes
  • “Dial V for Vile” Shorts
  • Press Start Dolls Parody Commercial
  • Trailers

We’ll also have some extra stuff online before the 18th, so check back!

Nice to see Press Start again.

I don’t suppose those of us who own the original DVD get some kind of perk?

  2. Steve Ulven says:

Long time, no talk. This is exciting news. I’m in for a double-dip. Put out a BluRay in a couple months and I’m in for a triple-dip. I hope this revisit means perhaps more Press Start stuff in the near future. This series is very high up on my favorite anything list.

I’m also glad to see you will stream the movie for free. This will make it really easy to get more people into this great series. I will certainly be pointing people in this direction on the 18th.

  3. Jacob says:

I’ll gladly buy the movie again.

  4. Ed Glaser says:

Thanks guys! Wish I could put out a Blu-ray, but it wouldn’t do much good as the film was shot in standard definition. 🙂

TheForsakenOne, those who bought the original DVD have a few extras that are not on the new disc. Including, most obviously, the original filmmaker commentary track. As well as the three extended “Press Start Adventures” (aka “Press Start: Bonus Levels”) episodes.

  5. TheeForsakenOne says:

Alright, fair enough. I was going to buy it anyway since I want to keep my Press Start collection complete.

  6. Steve Ulven says:

I always keep forgetting this is standard definition (I use the stretch feature to eliminate the black bars which tend to leave imprints on my TV). I believe I requested BluRay a few years back. Not thinking.

Now that I think of it, does this mean the current Press Start DVD is going away? It has a different slip cover than the version I have. Like TheeForsakenOne, I like complete collections and may want to add it to my collection before it goes away.

  7. Ed Glaser says:

The current DVD is indeed going away, but its content is the same as on the disc you have. Additionally, the new DVD will have a similar slip cover to the one that’s available now, if you like that artwork.

  8. I’m very excited about the remastered version, I love what the new color correction does to the look of the scenes with artificial lighting, although I’m not sure about the outside scenes with natural sunlight. They sometimes seem to have a weird glow in the teaser. So I’m glad I get a preview on the website before ordering. 😉

  9. Steve Ulven says:

Nice work! I love the new commentary and your George Lucas moments were good changes unlike one of my other favorite things ever (Star Wars). It was really nice to see the deleted scenes as well. I’m pleased with this double-dip and really hope this renews interest in the series.

  10. Ed Glaser says:

    Thanks Steve! 🙂

  11. Jacob says:

At some point I expect you guys to make Press Start 3 or at least more Press Start Adventures.
